COUNCIL for East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA) secretary general Nicholas Musonye has laid a scathing attack on countries that pulled out their teams from this year’s Kagame Cup, saying they were sabotaging the tournament.

A number of countries including Tanzania, South Sudan and Kenya had expressed security concerns ahead of the tournament and decided to pull out their teams from the tournament.

However, Musonye is optimistic that the tournament that kicked off yesterday in Darfur and South Gordofan will be a huge success and will contribute to the peace and development initiatives in Sudan. Musonye flew to South Kordofan last Sunday with a high powered Sudan delegation from Khartoum to ensure that nothing hinders the tournament.

The officials unperturbed by reports that the city had been shelled by rebels, urged people of Sudan and elsewhere in the region, who “believe in peace,” to ignore the reports and attend the matches as the “security was tight.”

South Sudan: On Abyei – Enough Is Enough

No one whether locally or internationally can still argue there is more hope to resolve Abyei stalemate peacefully. It has been everybody’s wish that dialogue could prevail over wrangling and peace over war. But all the well wishers, South Sudanese and Sudanese of good will are put to shame by intransigence of some of ruling elites in Khartoum.

For many peaceful options were suggested and equally exhausted that resulted in failed negotiated settlements. These were Comprehensive Peace Agreement, CPA that devoted one of its protocols on Abyei referendum in tandem with that of Southern Sudan in 2011, Abyei Boundary Commission, ABC whose findings were rejected by Khartoum, The Hague Court of Arbitration whose ruling remains gathering dust on the shelves due to Khartoum refusal to implement it. Then, came Khartoum invasion of Abyei in response to its alleged provocation by Juba in the run up to independence declaration. The whole world weighed in to resolve the crisis, urging both side to establish the Abyei joint administration and keep off the area militarily, but Khartoum refused the proposal while Juba has ever since been begging the AU and UN to either sweet talk out or flash out Sudan

CAR’s New President in Khartoum for Talks On Bilateral Ties

Khartoum — Michel Djotodia, new president of Central African Republic (CAR), arrived Monday to Khartoum where he held talks with his Sudanese counterpart Omer Al-Bashir.

Djotodia who is the first Muslim to lead his nation was elected last April by an acting parliament after toppling the regime of the former president François Bozizé.

During the two day visit the two leaders will sign bilateral cooperation agreements including health, transport and security issues, said the state minister for foreign affairs Salah Wansi on Monday.

Wansi stressed that the talks will also include the tripartite security cooperation deal between Chad, CAR, and Sudan. The three countries agreed last year to form a joint force to monitor the common border and prevent rebel attacks.

The two parties are also expected to discuss the presence of the Ugandan troops which are in CAR to search the rebel Lord Resistance Army (LRA). “Sudan is very concerned by the presence of the Ugandan troops there”, said a Western researcher working in the region because Kampala is supporting the Sudanese rebel groups and accuses Sudan of backing the LRA rebels.

Ambassador to Khartoum Speaks to Sudanese Press

Ethiopia‘s Ambassador to Khartoum, Ambassador Abadi Zemo told the Sudanese press that the implementation of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam Project is up to the development of Ethiopia as it is to neighboring countries.

The ambassador stressed his country does not aim to harm any of the interests of the downstream countries. Indeed that is why it provided Sudan and Egypt documents, explanations and studies to prove feasibility and benefits of the project.

The Ambassador described the Egyptian fears on the Dam as unjustifiable, particularly after the cooperation and flexibility shown by Ethiopia in order to preserve the interests of Egypt in the Nile water. He also underlined the unfounded allegations that claim countries such as Israel and others were seeking to harm Egypt through this project, stressing that these were mere fabrications.

Ethiopia, he pointed out, never pursued policies to harm others. He said the impacts of the project have been studied in a scientific approach and the project was being implemented by an Italian company with great experience and monitored by a specialized Chinese company.
